The Ministry of Education has taken proactive measures to address the learning disruption at Saint Thomas Primary School caused by a significant termite infestation affecting two classrooms. In response to a formal request from the school’s management, the Ministry swiftly supplied two high-performance tents, each totaling 72 square meters, to serve as temporary classrooms while more permanent solutions are developed.

The infected classrooms have been assessed and marked as unfit for educational use, with plans already in motion for their demolition. To replace these compromised facilities, a new classroom block measuring 1 x 2 will be constructed, aimed at providing a safer and more permanent environment for students.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns related to school infrastructures, particularly in regions affected by natural disasters or pest invasions. For instance, Valelawa Primary School, which has faced similar challenges, has been utilizing tents for classroom space due to severe damage from Tropical Cyclone Yasa. The situation at Valelawa has garnered attention due to the uncomfortable and unsafe conditions students are enduring, prompting calls for urgent resolutions.

While students at Saint Thomas Primary School benefit from the timely allocation of tents, it serves as a reminder of the critical need for continued investment in educational facilities across communities, ensuring that all students have access to safe and conducive learning environments. The commitment from the Ministry of Education to rebuild and enhance classroom conditions provides hope for a positive educational experience in the future.

There is optimism that the swift actions taken now will encourage further advances in the educational infrastructure, not only at Saint Thomas Primary but across schools facing similar hurdles. Solutions like these demonstrate a commitment to prioritizing education and well-being amid challenging circumstances.
