The Suva High Court has refused bail for 18-year-old student Rihaal Kumar, who is facing a murder charge. Kumar appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar, accused of killing a man in his 20s at an apartment complex in Suva earlier this month.
During the proceedings, the court was informed that the alleged murder was premeditated. It was revealed that Kumar used a dagger and two kitchen knives in the incident, and he reportedly purchased and sharpened the dagger prior to the attack. The motive for the murder remains unclear, though there were indications of a sexual nature in the online conversations between Kumar and the victim.
Kumar’s lawyer asserted that there was self-defense involved and argued for bail, noting that Kumar is a first-time offender still living with his parents. However, Justice Goundar denied the bail request and ordered a psychiatric evaluation for Kumar, adding that the accused’s mother has a history of schizophrenia and is a regular patient at St Giles Hospital. The court also noted that Kumar had been expelled from his high school prior to the incident.
The next court date is set for the 29th of next month for a plea, continuing a trend of grave concerns regarding violent crimes in the Suva area. Previous similar cases highlight an urgent need for community dialogue and intervention strategies aimed at addressing underlying issues leading to such violence.
As the case progresses, there is hope that awareness and discussions about these challenges could foster a safer environment for the community, encouraging collaborative efforts in crime prevention and mental health support.
