On a day when many 13-year-olds might typically be engrossed in their screens or hanging out with friends, Taniela Tave decided to take a different route this holiday season. Instead of engaging in usual adolescent activities, Taniela chose to dedicate his school break to helping his visually impaired grandfather, Lekini Vasukiwai, who is 73 years old.
Taniela, a student at Krishna Janardhan School, demonstrated his commitment during a celebration at the Civic Centre in Suva for Senior Citizens Day. He gently guided his grandfather through the event, making it a meaningful occasion he described as a “Christmas gift” to his beloved grandpa.
The presence of Taniela was particularly touching amid the festivities dedicated to the elderly. With patience and attentiveness, he ensured that his grandfather was comfortable and navigated the crowd with ease. “I am happy to be here with my grandfather to attend this celebration,” he expressed.
Lekini Vasukiwai, who originally hails from Lomaivuna in Naitasiri, underwent cataract surgery in 2000 that ultimately resulted in the loss of his eyesight—a life-altering event he still recalls vividly. “When I entered the hospital, I could see, but after the surgery, when I removed the plaster, I realized I had lost my vision,” he recalled. Since that day, Mr. Vasukiwai has had to adapt to his new reality, relearning everyday routines and often relying on others for assistance.
The Senior Citizens Day event emphasized honoring the wisdom and experience of the elderly, organized by the National Senior Citizens Council. Taniela’s quiet act of devotion stands as an example of the respect for elders that is not only taught in schools but also lived by young individuals—like him, who choose to spend their free time aiding family members in need.
This story underscores the importance of intergenerational connections, showcasing how love and respect can transcend age and circumstances. Taniela’s actions highlight the invaluable bond between grandchildren and grandparents, reminding us all of the profound impact of kindness and compassion.
