Telecom Fiji Ltd has partnered with the Fiji Police Force to implement an initiative focused on enhancing national security through technology. Announced during a signing event in Suva this week, this collaboration aims to improve public safety by utilizing advanced surveillance technology alongside a robust network infrastructure.
As part of the partnership, Telecom Fiji will establish high-speed fiber connectivity and camera systems covering the Suva to Nausori corridor. The video feeds from these cameras will be continuously monitored at the Fiji Police Command Centre located at Central Police Station in Suva. This project, referred to as the Safe City concept, is designed not only to address immediate safety needs but also to lay the groundwork for the development of “smarter cities” across Fiji in the future.
Telecom Fiji’s CEO, Charles Goundar, emphasized that this endeavor extends beyond mere technological advancement; it’s a commitment to fostering safer communities for all Fijians. He noted, “We are proud to partner with the Fiji Police Force in delivering a solution that not only improves public safety but also lays the groundwork for smarter cities in the future.”
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu highlighted the initiative as a significant step towards integrating technology into modern policing, which aligns with the department’s objective of maximizing the utility of technological innovations. He mentioned that real-time monitoring will enhance responsiveness to incidents, deter criminal activities, and help ensure the safety of citizens.
