The number of teachers choosing to leave for overseas opportunities has seen a marked decline, as reported by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. He views this decrease as a positive development, reinforcing the Ministry’s dedication to improving teacher retention. Efforts are being made to enhance working environments, which include fast-tracking repairs and maintenance in schools and ensuring that both teachers and students receive robust support.

Radrodro emphasized the importance of a significant budget for education to facilitate these improvements. His proactive strategy targets not only retaining qualified educators but also ensuring that programs assisting students continue without interruption. “We hope to fast-track the conduct of repairs and maintenance of schools. Also, we’re looking forward to a good budget for the retention of our teachers,” he noted.

The Minister’s focus on teacher welfare aligns with previous discussions regarding teacher absenteeism and the shortages faced in rural areas, which stem partly from global trends pulling educators towards countries offering better benefits. A comprehensive approach that addresses recruitment, retention, and job satisfaction is essential in combating these trends.

In past initiatives, Radrodro has stressed the need for increased teacher salaries and support for educational infrastructure—measures that have echoed throughout recent discussions on educational reforms. These efforts are crucial in creating a sustainable educational framework.

There is an underlying hope that with these actions, the educational environment in Fiji can transform into one that attracts and retains skilled teachers, ultimately benefiting the students they nurture. Enhanced collaboration among government entities, educational institutions, and the community will be vital for realizing these goals, paving the way for a more resilient education system.
