The community of Tavua is deeply mourning the loss of 14-year-old Eliki Delai, a Year Nine student at Balata High School who tragically passed away following a road incident involving a bus. Eliki was known for his inspirational spirit and was cherished by his classmates and teachers alike.
According to police spokesperson Ana Naisoro, the incident occurred early in the morning when Eliki was getting off a bus traveling from Waikubukubu to Tavua. In attempting to reboard the moving bus to assist other passengers, he slipped, leading to the fatal accident. His cousin, Timaima Sevutia, shared heartfelt memories of Eliki, describing him as an outstanding student who had a great passion for football.
Eliki’s coaches and peers reflect fondly on his contributions, particularly in sports. Shawal Prasad, his football coach for the Tavua Under 14 team, noted his potential, recalling that Eliki had scored during a significant tournament. He was not only involved in athletics; he was also active in the student council at Balata College and engaged in the Pathfinder program at Natolevu SDA Church.
Investigations into the accident’s circumstances are currently underway, with his body held at the Tavua Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.
