The students of Sigatoka Methodist School experienced an early Christmas celebration, courtesy of the Tappoo family, a prominent corporate family in Fiji. The Tappoo family’s strong ties to both the Sigatoka community and the school have deepened over time, culminating in a significant contribution to improve the school’s water supply.
Through the Tappoo Foundation, the family has provided support by constructing facilities for two 10,000-litre water tanks at the newly relocated Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu. This was celebrated at an inauguration ceremony attended by Kanti Tappoo, the chairperson of Tappoo Group and a former student of the school. During the event, he fondly recounted his childhood memories in Sigatoka, highlighting the family’s long-standing connection to the institution, with multiple generations having attended the school.
Mr. Tappoo expressed gratitude towards figures like the late Reverend Edward Caleb, who played a crucial role in instilling values and education in the children of the community. He also reflected on his family’s collective experiences, noting that even his grandchildren have been part of the school’s legacy.
A significant challenge faced by the school since its recent relocation to Kulukulu from Laselase has been inconsistent water supply. School manager Jacob Pau’u emphasized that the Tappoo family’s generosity has addressed these issues, ensuring that students have a reliable source of water even when supply is irregular. Plans for further development of the school are in the works, contingent on available funding.
The Tappoo Group, established by the late Tappoo Kanji in 1941, continues to honor its legacy by assisting various beneficiaries in the community, reinforcing the importance of giving back to those with which they share a history.
This initiative not only provides immediate relief to the school’s water challenges but also strengthens community ties and highlights the impactful role of corporate social responsibility. Such efforts inspire hope and demonstrate the power of local business support in fostering educational growth.
In summary, the Tappoo family’s recent contribution marks a meaningful step in improving the infrastructure of Sigatoka Methodist School, ensuring a better learning environment for its students and underlining the importance of community support and involvement in education.
