The students of Sigatoka Methodist School received an early Christmas gift, courtesy of the Tappoo family, one of Fiji’s prominent corporate families. Their longstanding connection with Sigatoka and the school is reaffirmed through their continuous support.
Recently, the Tappoo Group, via its philanthropic arm, the Tappoo Foundation, addressed a critical need for the school’s water supply. They constructed infrastructure to accommodate two 10,000-liter water tanks at the newly situated Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu.
At a ceremony inaugurating the new facilities, Kanti Tappoo, chairperson of the Tappoo Group and a former student of the school, reminisced about his childhood in Sigatoka along with his six siblings. He shared heartfelt memories of how generations of his family, including his grandchildren, have attended the school.
Reflecting on the past, Tappoo recalled the significant role of Sunday school and the impact of community leaders like the late Reverend Edward Caleb, who instilled foundational values in students. He expressed gratitude towards the school and the lessons it provided.
The relocation of a portion of Sigatoka Methodist School from Laselase to Kulukulu presented challenges, particularly regarding water supply. School manager Jacob Pau’u noted that while they currently have two Year 12 and two Year 13 classes, plans for further building development depend on financial support.
Pau’u acknowledged the Tappoo family’s kindness in addressing the school’s water issues, stating that the new tanks will ensure that students have a consistent supply, even during shortages. Mr. Tappoo emphasized the family’s commitment to giving back to the community that shaped them.
The Tappoo Group, founded by the late Tappoo Kanji in 1941, honors its anniversary by supporting various beneficiaries, including the Sigatoka Methodist School, resonating with the family’s values of community support.
This generous initiative by the Tappoo family exemplifies the importance of community and the impact that enduring relationships can have on local institutions. Through their continued support, the Tappoo family reinforces their commitment to education and the welfare of the Sigatoka community, spreading hope and inspiration for the future.
Summary: The Tappoo family has enhanced water supply infrastructure for Sigatoka Methodist School by facilitating the installation of water tanks, reaffirming their strong ties to the community and commitment to education, despite challenges posed by the school’s recent relocation.
