As the Namosi Challenge draws near, seasoned athlete and coach Ed Hawkes has shared valuable advice for participants looking to excel in this demanding race set for June 7. Hawkes, a renowned running coach from Melbourne and member of the Suva Marathon Club, emphasizes the importance of managing pre-race pressure and adopting a “taper” strategy in the final week of training.
“You don’t want to be tired before you start! This is called a ‘taper’; you should run a lower distance than in previous weeks to be fresh for race day,” Hawkes recommends. He also suggests avoiding leg strengthening exercises in the last week, making sure to hydrate and enjoy a good meal the night before the race. Stretching beforehand is also critical for success.
For first-time participants, Hawkes serves as an inspiring example, having won the men’s individual 10km challenge in last year’s race. He highlights his training routine, which includes running four times a week during the winter and three times in the summer, along with weekly leg strengthening workouts. Additionally, he hosts interval training sessions every Thursday at the Suva track, welcoming runners of all ages and abilities.
The community spirit of the Namosi Challenge attracts hundreds of participants every year, and Hawkes encourages newcomers to enjoy the experience and support each other. “Signing up in a team means you can share the experience and hold each other accountable,” he notes. He reassures participants that walking is acceptable, especially for those who appreciate the outdoors and the stunning scenery of Namosi.
While the terrain may present challenges, the breathtaking landscape and vibrant community atmosphere create a memorable experience. As Hawkes puts it, “Everybody is here to support each other, so don’t worry about the time. Focus on enjoying the beautiful surroundings.”
The Namosi Challenge is not only a test of endurance but also a celebration of the natural beauty of Fiji and the spirit of camaraderie. With each participant crossing the finish line, a lively atmosphere emerges filled with celebration, culminating in a refreshing dip at the Namosi Eco Retreat.
This year promises to deliver an exhilarating experience for all, combining physical challenge with community support and appreciation for Namosi’s remarkable landscapes.
