Taiwan is lending its support to Palau as the Pacific island nation prepares to host the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) next year, according to Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung. During a recent visit to Palau, Lin emphasized the importance of assisting the nation in successfully holding the annual event, referring to Palau as a “steadfast friend” of Taiwan.
The Minister highlighted the long-standing principles of the “Pacific Way,” which focus on promoting regional peace and prosperity through diversity, inclusiveness, and cooperation—values that are integral to the PIF. This comes in contrast to a recent decision by the Solomon Islands, which barred Taiwan, the U.S., China, and 21 other countries from participation in the 2025 PIF.
To further support its diplomatic allies, Taiwan has developed the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project, tailored to meet the specific needs of its partners while aligning with their sustainable national development objectives. In the case of Palau, the initiative encompasses key areas such as digital development, energy, and resilience.
During his visit, Lin toured PIF venues alongside Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. and Minister of State Gustav Aitaro, exploring sites like the Ngarachamayong Cultural Centre and the National Stadium. Preliminary plans include Taiwan assisting Palau in establishing green transportation systems to accommodate dignitaries attending the PIF. Importantly, these services are designed to remain in place post-forum, benefiting local communities and contributing to Palau’s environmental sustainability ambitions.
Lin reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to collaborating with Palau and other like-minded nations, aiming to ensure that the diversity and inclusiveness of the Pacific region serve as strengths that foster cooperation and development. This positive partnership reflects Taiwan’s dedication to regional stability and solidarity among Pacific nations.
