Queen Victoria School (QVS) and Tailevu North College (TNC) triumphed at yesterday’s Tailevu Zone competition held at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium, winning the boys’ and girls’ championships respectively.

In the boys’ division, QVS achieved an outstanding medal count, claiming 33 gold, 21 silver, and 19 bronze medals. Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) followed in second place, securing 15 gold medals, along with 21 silver and 13 bronze. In the girls’ category, TNC showcased their strength by collecting 23 gold, 11 silver, and 13 bronze, with Dawasamu Secondary School taking second place with 10 gold, 12 silver, and 11 bronze medals.

A highlight of the competition was the QVS junior boys’ 4x400m relay team, which included captain Timoci Mataqaru and teammates Seremaia Jiuta, Jale Waqawai, and Nailatikau Buinivuaka. The team achieved a surprise victory in their event, with Mataqaru expressing their disbelief: “We really didn’t expect to win. It was a shock.” He attributed their success to their rigorous preparations, which included fasting and prayer, reflecting their spiritual discipline which they felt was integral to their triumph.

This year’s competition not only celebrated individual athletic achievements but also fostered camaraderie among participating schools. The event exemplified community support for young athletes, highlighting the positive spirit surrounding the Tailevu Zone and suggesting a bright future for athletics in Fiji.

As the excitement from this competition lingers, it is anticipated that these spirited young athletes will inspire future generations to pursue excellence in athletics. The encouragement and commitment from schools and communities underscore the importance of such events in nurturing talent and fostering school spirit.
