Communities in Fiji’s outer islands are facing significant challenges with rising plastic waste, which Conservation International (CI) Fiji program director Mere Lakeba has identified as part of a broader environmental concern. As access to commercial goods increases alongside consumption on these remote islands, particularly in the Lau Seascape region, waste management has become increasingly difficult.

Lakeba highlighted that the influx of various plastic goods, such as noodles, diapers, and other items, has compounded the issue. While these materials serve practical purposes, they ultimately become burdensome waste when no longer usable. Limited waste management infrastructure means much of this waste accumulates on the islands, leading to unmanaged pollution.

In response, CI, alongside partners such as the Grace Trifam Ministry, is actively working to catalog and categorize waste on the islands to develop strategies for effective management and mitigation. This structured approach is part of CI’s Large Marine Seascape Program and focuses on natural resource management, climate change, socio-cultural aspects, and socio-economic development.

Echoing these concerns, the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) has also reported a sharp rise in requests for assistance with waste management solutions across other outer islands, including Ovalau and Kadavu. Their initiatives emphasize the necessity for collaborative efforts from governmental and non-governmental organizations to address these pressing environmental issues.

Despite the complexity of the situation, the heightened awareness and proactive measures being taken by organizations and local communities present a hopeful future. By fostering collaborative efforts and creating community-led solutions, there is strong potential for sustainable development that benefits both the environment and the livelihoods of island residents. Engaging communities in waste management practices not only addresses the current crisis but lays the groundwork for a healthier, more resilient future in Fiji.
