Two men charged in connection with an attempted robbery in Tacirua New Subdivision on December 20 have been remanded as they prepare for a formal bail application. Sailosi Lakovi and Sekove Tawake are facing serious charges, including one count of attempted robbery, two counts of resisting arrest, and two counts of refusing to provide fingerprints.

During the court proceedings, the defense counsel requested that the accused be remanded at Valelevu Police Station, citing the need for medical attention due to injuries sustained by both men. However, the Police Prosecutor opposed the bail application, emphasizing the public interest and the risk of reoffending should the men be released.

Magistrate Dipika Prakash pointed out that police stations are not designated remand facilities and noted that remand centers could provide necessary medical personnel to address health concerns. Lakovi raised concerns about legal flaws in the charging process, arguing that while charges were filed on December 21, they were only interviewed yesterday. The Magistrate advised him to discuss such concerns with legal counsel.

Both accused declined to be interviewed when taken for police questioning, and they have opted to have their case heard in the Magistrates’ Court with the intention of being represented by a private lawyer. The matter has been adjourned, with a bail hearing scheduled for January 6.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement and the legal system in managing serious criminal offenses while ensuring the rights of the accused are upheld. The upcoming bail hearing will be crucial in determining the next steps in this high-profile case.
