Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Information, has responded vigorously to criticism of her role, asserting that her ministry is fundamental to fostering public trust and ensuring national accountability. Speaking in Parliament, Tabuya emphasized that while her work may not involve tangible infrastructure like roads or hospitals, it plays an essential role in building public confidence.

In her stirring address, Tabuya stated, “We don’t cut ribbons. We connect citizens to what those ribbons stand for.” She highlighted the importance of effective communication, illustrating how social media can be a vital tool in disseminating critical information. “The post you scroll past may be the one that tells you your daughter’s school is reopening, or how to get disaster relief,” she added, suggesting that engagement in platforms like TikTok is necessary to reach citizens effectively.

Tabuya outlined a series of significant reforms aimed at revolutionizing government communications, which include implementing a national crisis communication protocol, launching a user-friendly government website, and establishing a rapid response unit to address misinformation. She argued that “Information is the lifeblood of a healthy democracy,” underscoring that unhindered information flow is essential for democratic governance.

Furthermore, she indicated that all government departments will be mandated to submit concise communications plans to ensure consistent messaging. Tabuya stated her commitment to communicating in ways that resonate with ordinary citizens, citing an example of how a farmer might perceive the impact of tax reforms on their everyday costs.

This reflects a consistent theme in her recent public statements: a dedication to enhancing the public’s understanding of governmental processes and decisions. Following her controversial dismissal from a previous position, Tabuya’s commitment remains firm, as she aims to advocate for the rights and well-being of vulnerable groups in Fiji, particularly in the context of women and children. Her resilience amidst scrutiny can inspire a more robust dialogue about civility and the treatment of public figures, especially women, in the political realm.

Tabuya’s proactive stance and reforms may pave the way for more effective governance and a well-informed citizenry, fostering hope for a more participatory and accountable political landscape in Fiji.
