A significant event took place in Suva last Saturday, where the Fiji Society for the Blind Charity Golf Tournament drew a remarkable turnout of 136 players. Hosted at the Pirates Golf Club, this tournament not only showcased golfing talent but also highlighted an important cause—supporting the visually impaired.
Throughout the day, participants benefitted from free eye screenings provided by the Society, reinforcing the tournament’s focus on eye health and awareness. The fundraising efforts for the day included a vibrant charity auction where attendees could bid on various items. Noteworthy contributions featured a luxury bed from Comfort Home, a signed and framed Drua rugby jersey, and resort stays generously provided by Castaway Island and The Pearl. The auction was complemented by a raffle draw that attracted additional donations from numerous local businesses and philanthropists.
Tournament Controller Susie Yee emphasized the community spirit that defined the day, stating, “It was more than just a golf day — it was the community coming together to help others see a better future.” The winning team, DMC, comprised of Mahmood Buksh, Rajesh Kumar, Janen Prasad, and Laisa Digitaki, secured victory with an impressive score of 56 points, earning both honors and bragging rights for the upcoming year.
As the day concluded, players were treated to a dinner sponsored by BSP, marking a successful day filled with competitive spirit, camaraderie, and generosity. Barbara Farouk, Executive Director of the Society, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and volunteers, acknowledging that “your support means everything to us.” The tournament successfully raised over $30,000, with all funds directed towards the Society’s crucial work for those with visual impairments.
This event not only served as a showcase of golfing excellence but also underscored the potential of community engagement in driving positive change. The overwhelming support for the Fiji Society for the Blind emphasizes the importance of coming together for meaningful causes, fostering hope and better futures for those in need.
