Taxi operators in Suva played an essential role in apprehending a man who attempted to steal a vehicle with two young children inside. The incident took place last night when a 28-year-old woman was involved in a minor accident on Victoria Parade. While she waited for police assistance, she left her car keys in the ignition. A man took this opportunity to jump into the driver’s seat and drive off with her two daughters in the backseat.

The alert was quickly raised with the police, who notified taxi operators in the Suva area about the situation. Using their Radio Transmitters (RT), the information was disseminated broadly. The stolen vehicle was later spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect stopped the car and let the young girls out.

A vigilant taxi operator managed to intercept the vehicle, granting the police valuable time to arrive and arrest the suspect. Although the man resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers, he was ultimately taken into custody, and investigations are continuing.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu commended the taxi operators for their swift action, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in crime prevention. “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime,” he stated.

To recognize their efforts, a team from the Totogo Police Station is scheduled to visit the taxi operators today to express gratitude for their critical role in resolving the incident.

This occurrence showcases the power of community vigilance and cooperation in enhancing public safety. It emphasizes the positive impact that ordinary citizens can have in supporting law enforcement and protecting vulnerable individuals. With such partnerships, communities can work together to foster a safer environment for everyone.
