The Ministry of Sugar Industry has formally requested $100 million from the government for the upcoming financial year, a figure that is double what the ministry received in the current budget. Minister Charan Jeath Singh emphasized that this increased funding is crucial for enhancing support across 14 programs aimed at benefiting sugarcane farmers.

Singh noted that additional funding would allow for more substantial subsidies, which he believes could raise sugarcane production by 5 to 10 percent for farmers. He also mentioned the importance of increased financial support for manual labor harvesting, referencing the current production levels that hover around 1.3 to 1.4 million tons of cane. While acknowledging that some farmers may be underperforming, Singh assured that those doing well would benefit significantly if his funding request is granted.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has indicated that all funding requests are currently under review, and he aims to focus the upcoming budget on a concerted effort to support various sectors.

In addition to the sugar industry funding, Singh has requested an extra $10 million for the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs to provide grants for various projects, reflecting a broader approach to community support and development.

This increased budget support signals a promising commitment to the future of the sugar industry and its workers. By providing the necessary resources for growth and sustainability, the Ministry aims to create a more profitable and resilient agricultural sector in Fiji. The government’s willingness to review these funding requests may pave the way for revitalization efforts that can strengthen the economy and empower local farmers.

The overall optimism surrounding these financial allocations could lead to innovative advancements within the sugar industry, ultimately benefiting the broader community and enhancing Fiji’s agricultural landscape.
