The Government is contemplating a total ban on processed and sugary foods and beverages in schools, as announced by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya. This initiative coincides with the launch of the National Early Childhood Development (ECD) Policy for the years 2024-2028.
The policy highlights the critical issue of children’s nutrition, pointing out that poor dietary habits can lead to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at a young age. Ms. Tabuya emphasized the importance of improving the food options available in schools, advocating for the exclusion of sugary drinks and foods such as donuts and other highly processed items from the school environment.
To promote better nutrition, she expressed a desire to revert to a focus on organic produce, fresh fruits, and adequate water consumption, which are essential for supporting children’s brain development. Ms. Tabuya stated that she would collaborate with her colleagues to implement these health-focused policies effectively.
Additionally, she praised the implementation of the ECD policy in conjunction with the recently passed Child Care and Protection Act and Child Justice Act. The Government is committed to enhancing child welfare through proactive measures rather than merely responding to issues as they arise.
