Residents in Suva are increasingly frustrated by the growing piles of rubbish accumulating along the streets, mostly attributed to careless dumping habits. Despite the availability of waste bins, individuals are failing to dispose of their rubbish responsibly, prompting calls for action from the Suva City Council (SCC) to address this ongoing issue.
A resident from Nairai Rd expressed discontent, stating, “It’s an eyesore when we go to work in the mornings or come home, and see rubbish around the bin rather than in it.” This sentiment is echoed across the community, where various individuals are urging the SCC to implement measures that encourage responsible waste disposal, such as awareness campaigns and increased rubbish collection services.
Similar concerns were raised by former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Pita Nacuva, who highlighted a decline in civic pride and responsibility regarding waste management. He noted that past generations demonstrated a greater inclination towards keeping public spaces clean, whereas today’s habits reflect a careless attitude towards littering. He emphasized that education and community engagement play crucial roles in fostering a culture of respect for the environment.
The SCC’s health and waste management team conducted a cleanup campaign but found that inappropriate disposal containers contributed to wastage scattered by stray animals, further degrading the area’s appearance and raising public health concerns. Residents have called for improved waste disposal strategies, including more frequent rubbish collection days, to mitigate these problems.
The responsibility for maintaining cleanliness ultimately rests not only with local authorities but also with the community. Both residents and officials stress that individual accountability, combined with community cooperation, is vital in reversing this trend.
