Work on Suva’s long-awaited Olympic swimming pool is set to resume in the coming weeks after the Suva City Council successfully secured a contractor to carry out the needed upgrades. Following an extended period of inactivity, the pool, which is anticipated to reopen in November 2025, will finally see progress as the council navigated through its procurement process.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chief executive of the Suva City Council, explained that the delay was primarily due to the careful selection of a vendor to ensure the completion of the project. “We’ve just engaged a contractor — a vendor — to upgrade. So that was the issue; we had to select the right one,” he stated.

Preliminary preparations have already begun, including cleaning the facility, with the next steps involving the removal of water from the pool and completing the remaining upgrades. “They’ve cleaned it up already at one stage. So now it’s just pumping the water out, and then finalising, completing,” Mr. Boseiwaqa added.

He indicated that physical work on the site is expected to commence shortly, with a target start date possibly within the next two weeks. “So, it should be starting soon, maybe by next week. If not, within two weeks, let’s say within two weeks, it should start, especially the pumping and so on.”

The Olympic pool serves as a vital public sports facility in the capital city, utilized by swimmers, educational institutions, and various sporting organizations. The upgrade is part of the Suva City Council’s comprehensive initiative to enhance public infrastructure and recreational spaces for residents, reflecting a commitment to improving community facilities and promoting sports in the region. This progress signals a promising development for the community, ensuring that essential recreational facilities remain accessible and well-maintained for public use.
