The Suva City Council has expressed its concerns over the recent discovery of sewer seepage within the city’s boundaries. Acting Chief Executive Officer Tevita Boseiwaqa highlighted the complexity of the situation, as the sewer infrastructure is managed by both the Water Authority of Fiji and the Sewerage Department. The affected area is located within a subdivision overseen by the Housing Authority, involving multiple agencies in addressing this pressing issue.
Acknowledging their limitations, Boseiwaqa stated that the Council cannot remain passive in the face of such problems. While they lack the authority or technical expertise to repair sewer lines, they have initiated measures to mitigate the situation by bailing out wastewater where possible. “Instead of just waiting and doing nothing, we have gone out there to bail out those ‘waste’. That’s all what we can do because we cannot go under,” he noted.
Investigations revealed that the sewage line is old and damaged, leading to the troubling seepage. The Council has reported the findings to the Water Authority, Sewerage Department, and Housing Authority, emphasizing the need for a coordinated response. In the meantime, they commit to continuing assistance as they wait for action from the relevant agencies.
This proactive approach by the Suva City Council underscores their dedication to public health and community welfare. The collaboration among various authorities will be crucial in resolving the sewage issue and ensuring the city remains a safe and clean environment for its residents.
