Concerns are rising regarding the safety of both businesses and consumers in Suva as drug-related activities increase in several areas of the city. Jitesh Patel, President of the Suva Retailers Association, has pointed out the presence of identified hotspots known for drug activity, which have become a source of anxiety for local retailers.
According to Patel, the fear stemming from these issues is impacting business operations, particularly during critical shopping periods. He has described specific locations, such as certain car parks, as notorious for drug-related incidents. In response to these challenges, retailers are working in close partnership with the police and other authorities to improve safety measures throughout the city.
To combat the issue further, Patel highlighted efforts to install additional surveillance cameras in these hotspots. So far, nearly 40 cameras have been positioned in strategic areas of Suva, with ongoing discussions to finalize internet connectivity, allowing the surveillance system to link directly to the control center at Totogo.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aporosa Lutunauga, confirmed that law enforcement is implementing comprehensive strategies aimed at addressing public safety concerns. He stressed the importance of community responsibility, stating that maintaining law and order is a collective effort requiring everyone’s participation.
Authorities are optimistic that the measures being put in place will enhance security within the city, ultimately helping to restore confidence among consumers and encouraging them to return to shopping in Suva. With proactive engagement and improved surveillance, there is hope for a safer environment for all.
