The Rotaract Club of Suva recently donated an ultrasound system to the anaesthesia and Intensive Care Department (ICU) at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva. The donation was coordinated by Dr. John Salmon, a Melbourne-based Rotarian and former lecturer at the Fiji National University, along with Suva Rotaractor Clifford Smith from Shipping Services (Fiji) Pte Ltd.

During the handover, ICU clinical lead, Dr. Anisi Kavoa, expressed sincere appreciation for the ultrasound machine, noting its importance for not just ICU patients but also for many other departments located in the hospital’s east wing.

Margret Savou, president of the Rotaract Club of Suva, explained that this donation is part of a broader initiative aimed at helping the hospital improve its capacity to serve patients more effectively. She acknowledged the essential logistical support provided by Shipping Services (Fiji) Pte Ltd in making this donation possible.

Earlier this year, under the guidance of former president Kelera Kuboutawa, the club also donated essential medical equipment including a respiratory monitor, dispersers, teaching displays, and various monitoring devices. Furthermore, last year, the club facilitated the provision of an additional ultrasound system for the obstetrics and gynaecology department.

The Rotaract Club of Suva was chartered on October 23, 1970, by the Rotary Club of Suva and is recognized as the oldest Rotaract Club in the South Pacific. These clubs are instrumental in creating a platform for individuals aged 18 and older to engage with community leaders, hone leadership and professional skills, and participate in meaningful service activities.

This initiative demonstrates the commitment of the Rotaract Club to enhancing healthcare services in Fiji, showcasing how collaborative efforts can lead to significant improvements in community health and well-being. Such donations not only provide immediate assistance but signal a hopeful future for medical services, ensuring that vital equipment is available for the treatment of patients in need.
