The government is set to assist the relocation of 114 residents currently living in Public Rental Board (PRB) flats on Mead Road in Suva after the buildings were found to be structurally unsafe. This decision follows a consultation where Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa, alongside representatives from the PRB, informed tenants that the flats, which have been in use for over 50 years, have surpassed their intended lifespan and are inadequate for long-term living.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “The PRB units and blocks were not meant for long-term residents.” Following assessments conducted by two engineers, it was determined that the safety of the current tenants could no longer be guaranteed.
To facilitate this transition, the government plans to work closely with the affected families, offering them relocation options to areas such as Nasinu and Nepani. Furthermore, support will be provided for tenants interested in finding land and constructing their own homes. In a strategic move to promote housing stability, Mr. Nalumisa announced that future tenants of the PRB will be limited to a maximum tenancy period of six years. This timeframe is designed to encourage new tenants to secure land and access government housing assistance programs, including those offered by the iTaukei Land Trust Board.
In a forward-looking approach, it was also revealed that the existing flats on Mead Road will eventually be demolished to pave the way for a new residential development. The government plans to introduce a scheme aimed at assisting tenants in purchasing land and building houses, with measures in place to expedite application processes.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving living conditions and supporting residents in finding sustainable housing solutions.
