India’s 77th Republic Day was commemorated at India House on Princes Road in Suva, where members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India came together to celebrate this significant occasion. India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, emphasized the profound importance of Republic Day for Indians around the globe.

“Republic Day is truly a significant occasion for all Indians, whether they’re in India or living abroad,” Mr. Mehta remarked. He noted that people of Indian origin in Fiji embraced this day with great respect, recognizing its historical and constitutional significance.

Highlighting its importance, he reminded attendees that it was on January 26, 1950, that the Indian Constitution took effect. “We are celebrating today’s 77th Republic Day with all members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India here at India House,” he added.

For Mr. Mehta, this event was particularly special as it provided an opportunity to unite the Indian community and supporters of India in Fiji. “As the High Commissioner of India in Fiji, it’s really a special occasion for me to welcome all the Indians and friends of India here,” he expressed.

He also underscored the significance of the Indian Constitution, calling it the foundation of the nation’s values and identity. “This is the document that gives us pride and dignity, ensuring liberty, justice, and sovereignty, alongside secularism in India—principles that we hold dear to our hearts.”

Extending his warm wishes beyond Fiji, Mr. Mehta acknowledged the broader responsibilities of the Indian High Commission, wishing a happy Republic Day to all Indians and those of Indian origin in countries under their jurisdiction, such as Kiribati, Tonga, and Tuvalu.

This celebration not only marks a historic day for India but also strengthens the bonds of the Indian diaspora in Fiji and beyond.
