American football fans in Suva enjoyed an exciting Super Bowl watch party hosted by the US Embassy at the Damodar Cinemas in Damodar City Centre. The event featured the 60th edition of the Super Bowl, where the Seattle Seahawks triumphed over the New England Patriots with a score of 29-13 at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, California.
John Degory, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the gathering celebrated the shared cultural values of both the United States and Fiji. The event witnessed a notable turnout, which included members of the diplomatic community alongside enthusiastic local fans.
Attendees were treated to a lively atmosphere as they watched the game broadcasted live on the big screen, enjoyed complimentary pizza, and participated in a lucky draw where prizes included American footballs. This marked the first Super Bowl viewing organized by the US Embassy in Suva, aligning with a Public Private Partnership established between the US Department of State and the National Football League (NFL). This initiative is part of the NFL’s efforts to expand the sport’s reach to global audiences, promoting American culture and values such as integrity, fair play, and mutual respect.
Additionally, the embassy is also celebrating the “Decade of Sport in America,” which commenced in 2024, highlighting major sporting events happening in the United States. The partnership and the celebration of sporting events signify a commitment to fostering international connections and promoting cultural exchange through sports.
