The Suva Grammar School under-17 rugby team is gearing up for the national quarter-finals of the Vodafone Deans competition next week, following a significant 24-10 victory over Marist Brothers High School in the Southern Zone competition. Co-coach Epeli Osborne expressed that while the team showed promise in their recent match, there are several areas that need improvement, particularly focusing on discipline.
Osborne emphasized the importance of continuous development, especially among young players. Half of the under-17 squad transitioned to the under-18 team, which also claimed victory against Marist in their division. In addition to these changes, the departure of four players who secured overseas contracts has created a need for the remaining athletes to step up.
The match against Marist showcased the team’s potential, as they led 14-10 at halftime and managed to maintain their composure under pressure. However, Osborne pointed out their tendency to give away unnecessary penalties, which could have cost them the game. He noted the necessity to keep discipline in check to prevent opponents from capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
Osborne also extended his appreciation to the supportive parents and guardians of the team, acknowledging their role as the backbone of the players. Furthermore, he commended his fellow coach, Orisi Vukinavanua, for their collaborative efforts throughout the season.
Looking ahead to the national quarter-finals, the team is hopeful but recognizes the competitive nature of the upcoming matches. The positive environment fostered by the school community and the resilience displayed by the players during preparation have instilled a sense of optimism for their future performances.
The dedication to improvement, combined with the support from their families and the school, serves as a foundation for the Suva Grammar under-17 rugby team’s pursuit of success as they advance in the competition.
