The Suva City Council is set to bolster security in the capital by installing between 40 and 80 advanced surveillance cameras in key public areas, including the Suva Market and the bus terminal. This initiative, announced by CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa, focuses on the so-called “bridge-to-bridge” zone, which stretches from Walu Bay Bridge to Nubukalou Bridge.

Boseiwaqa highlighted that these modern cameras are equipped with advanced features, such as night vision capabilities that allow for clear imagery even in low-light conditions and robust resistance to tampering. The cameras will stream data to monitoring rooms, ensuring real-time oversight of activities in these critical areas. He also noted that this measure not only aims to deter criminal activity but also to enhance the performance of city staff.

Furthermore, the council plans to declare certain areas as drug-free zones, with surveillance playing a pivotal role in monitoring these locations. By implementing such technologies, the city hopes to actively prevent crime and instill a stronger sense of safety for residents and business owners alike.

Similar initiatives have recently been observed in the region, where the installation of CCTV systems has been met with optimism from local businesses amidst concerns over rising crime rates. The community is hopeful that these advancements will lead to a safer urban environment, strengthening confidence among traders and residents.

This investment in public safety reflects a proactive approach by the Suva City Council and law enforcement, aiming to significantly enhance security measures across the city. There is a collective anticipation within the community that these improvements will foster a better living and business environment in Suva.
