The Suva City Council has officially approved a five percent salary increase for all staff members following discussions among council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the SCC’s special administrator and acting chief executive officer, emphasized the hard work of the staff in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva city and acknowledged their contributions with this pay adjustment. “A thorough consultation was carried out with everyone, especially the union and staff and heads of departments before we took this bold step,” he noted.
This pay increase will benefit both established and unestablished workers, and it is part of a broader benefits package offered by the SCC. Boseiwaqa also highlighted the sick leave benefit that was implemented before Christmas as one of these initiatives.
The salary increase will be distributed in parts: workers will receive a two percent payout on December 31, with an additional one percent scheduled for January 28. The final installment of two percent is expected to be delivered before April 17. Boseiwaqa expressed special recognition for municipal workers who often spend considerable time away from home, stating that this increase is intended to help them better balance their work and family lives.
Additionally, the SCC has regularized all acting positions as of December 31, marking a significant step in enhancing stability within the council. Those who held acting positions for over six months will see their roles formalized, with a move away from contracted positions to tenureship for all roles beneath the CEO level. This aligns with the council’s strategic goal of fostering a healthy working environment and strong leadership.
In summary, the Suva City Council’s initiatives reflect a commitment to recognizing and supporting its workforce, aiming to enhance job security and overall morale. This positive move not only benefits the employees but also contributes to the well-being of the community they serve. The ongoing measures indicate a proactive approach in municipal governance, focusing on constructive employee relationships and organizational stability.
