The Suva City Council has announced a five percent salary increase for all its employees, reinforcing its commitment to supporting municipal workers. This salary adjustment follows consultations among council members, the special administrator, and Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the SCC’s special administrator and acting chief executive officer, praised the hard work of the council’s staff in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva city. He emphasized the importance of recognizing their efforts, stating, “They are the ones that got the job done.”
The salary increase benefits both established and unestablished workers and is part of a broader package of four benefits provided by the SCC. Previously, municipal workers received a new sick leave benefit before Christmas. The salary increment will be executed in two percent installments beginning on the last day of 2024, followed by an additional one percent payout on January 28. The final two percent will be distributed before April 17.
Boseiwaqa also acknowledged the sacrifices made by municipal workers who often spend significant time away from their families, highlighting that this pay increase is intended to help them achieve a better work-life balance.
In line with these positive developments, the SCC has also regularized acting positions that have been in place for more than six months as of December 31, 2024. This initiative is designed to foster a stable and healthy leadership environment. Positions below the CEO level will transition from contractual arrangements to tenureship, with ongoing assessments to monitor progress.
This positive approach by the Suva City Council fosters a supportive work environment and recognizes the contributions of municipal employees, reflecting a commitment to employee welfare and operational stability.
In summary, the Suva City Council’s decision to increase salaries and regularize positions not only benefits the workers but also strengthens the municipality as a whole, paving the way for a motivated workforce dedicated to serving the community.
