Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay following an incident involving the new vessel RFNS Timo on December 19. This was confirmed by Commodore Humphrey Tawake as investigations are ongoing regarding the circumstances of the docking mishap.
The RFNS Timo, which was brought in from Australia as a replacement for the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, sustained minor damage to its port-side stern during the berthing operations at Walu Bay Navy Pier. The incident occurred due to a combination of gusty winds and restricted space while docking, complicated by the presence of commercial vessels nearby. Allegations surfaced that some of the sailors involved were intoxicated on the day of the accident.
Commodore Tawake stated that a disciplinary process is already underway for the involved sailors, who remain members of the force but are suspended pending the conclusion of the investigation. Additionally, plans are being made to obtain approval for the disposal of RFNS Puamau, which ran aground earlier in the year.
The Navy is taking these incidents seriously, indicating commitment to accountability and safety in their operations.
In a positive light, the actions taken by the Navy demonstrate a resolve to uphold standards, ensuring that all members are accountable for their actions, thereby enhancing operational safety and integrity in the future.
