The Permanent Secretary for Civil Service, Parmesh Chand, has expressed concerns regarding a meeting between suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. This discussion took place during the Emperor’s birthday celebrations at the Japanese Embassy on February 28, 2023, a time when Sayed-Khaiyum was under investigation.

While testifying at Pryde’s tribunal hearing in Suva, Chand noted that the two engaged in conversation for over 30 minutes, a situation he deemed inappropriate given the context of ongoing investigations. Chand pointed out that as a senior public servant, he would avoid such interactions as they can lead to misinterpretations and compromised situations. He emphasized that the DPP should have exercised discretion, particularly considering the serious nature of the investigations against Sayed-Khaiyum.

Chand observed the conversation closely but refrained from speculating on its content. He described the discussion as intense and uninterrupted by others. The tribunal is reviewing allegations of misconduct related to Pryde, which could result in his removal from his position.

Additionally, it was reported that on December 4, 2023, Pryde was still receiving a monthly payment of US$1000 as superannuation without the necessary approvals from the Judicial Services Commission, the Office of the Attorney-General, or the Office of the President.

The tribunal hearings are ongoing, with the matter adjourned to a later date, indicating that further proceedings will shed light on these serious accusations.

This case highlights the complexities and potential conflicts of interest in public service roles, particularly in legal and governmental contexts. It serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and adherence to proper protocols, ensuring that public officials not only maintain ethical standards but also uphold the integrity of the judicial process. Overall, there is hope that these proceedings will lead to clearer guidelines and policies that prevent future incidents, fostering trust in public institutions.
