The report regarding the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, will soon be made public but only after President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has thoroughly reviewed the findings, conducted consultations, and obtained advisory feedback. The President’s office has confirmed that this process is currently delayed due to officials being on leave for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The report was initially presented to the President on December 23, 2024.

Christopher Pryde, who has held the DPP position since 2011, was suspended with full pay on April 13, 2023, pending investigations into claims of misbehavior related to his meetings with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. Following his suspension, a tribunal was formed to investigate these allegations, led by Justice Anare Tuilevuka, along with Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica.

In his recent correspondence to the President’s office, Mr. Pryde referred to specific sections of the Fiji Constitution emphasizing that if the tribunal finds insufficient evidence impeaching his conduct, his suspension should be lifted immediately, enabling his reinstatement and the resumption of his salary.

Moreover, Mr. Pryde highlighted the urgency of resolving the matter as nearly 21 months have passed since his suspension and six months without receiving his salary have placed him under significant financial strain. He has called for a prompt conclusion to the process, asserting that it falls within constitutional directives.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has refrained from commenting on the situation, stating that it is not within his authority. The President’s office has acknowledged the necessity of making the report public, which will occur once due consideration has been given.

This situation exemplifies the complexities surrounding public office suspensions and the interconnectedness of constitutional regulations, making it imperative that the process is handled with diligence. The forthcoming publication of the report could bring closure and possibly a positive resolution for Mr. Pryde, allowing him to resume his duties and regain financial stability.

In summary, as we await the release of the report, it’s important to recognize the significance of upholding legal processes effectively while ensuring that individuals in public roles are treated fairly and justly. With the new year on the horizon, there is hope that this matter will soon reach a conclusion that reflects the rule of law.
