Police are investigating the discovery of a white substance believed to be methamphetamine at a tertiary institution in the Samabula area of Suva, the latest development in a string of drug-related inquiries in the capital.

FBC News understands the suspected drugs were found inside a small zip-lock bag on the institution’s premises. Authorities have not publicly disclosed how or when the items were located, nor whether any individuals have been detained in connection with the discovery. Police confirm an investigation is underway and said they are attempting to contact the institution for comment. More details are expected to be released as inquiries progress.

The nature of the substance has not yet been confirmed by forensic testing. Police typically refer seized material to the Fiji Police Forensic and Science Services for analysis to establish the exact composition and quantity; an official test result would be needed before any criminal charges could be laid. Investigators will also be seeking to establish the chain of custody for the item and whether it is connected to any wider distribution activity in Suva.

The incident comes amid an intensified focus on methamphetamine and other illicit drugs across the capital in recent months. In September, two Suva police officers were arrested in relation to a separate alleged methamphetamine case, underscoring concerns about both the prevalence of the drug and its reach into different communities. Other prosecutions and raids around the region have heightened public attention on enforcement efforts and the social impact of methamphetamine use.

Police have not said whether the discovery at the Samabula tertiary institution is thought to be isolated or part of a broader pattern affecting educational campuses. Officials are expected to update the public once forensic results are available and inquiries identify any suspects or links to supply networks. Education authorities at the unnamed institution have yet to respond to requests for comment.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement sources stress that confirmation through laboratory testing is essential before any conclusions are drawn. The Fiji Police Force has indicated that further information will follow as officers complete enquiries and determine the next steps.
