New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters made an unexpected visit to Fiji, where he engaged in high-level discussions with key members of the Fijian Government in Nadi. Peters took to social media platform X to confirm his presence and the meetings held with five Fijian ministers, covering a broad spectrum of bilateral, regional, and global topics.

During his visit, Peters met with prominent Fijian officials, including Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade; Viliame Naupoto, the Minister for Immigration; Ioane Naivalurua, the Minister for Policing; Esrom Immanuel, the Minister for Finance; and Inosi Kuridrani, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture.

The discussions emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between New Zealand and Fiji, particularly concerning security measures, drug smuggling, transnational crime, labor mobility, and opportunities for trade and investment. Furthermore, the ministers exchanged perspectives on regional issues, such as New Zealand’s upcoming role as the host of the Pacific Islands Forum in the next year, alongside other global matters of shared interest.

Peters’ surprise visit highlights the strong diplomatic and strategic ties between Fiji and New Zealand, especially in light of increasing regional challenges related to crime, labor, and economic stability. The unannounced nature of the trip suggests a commitment to ongoing ministerial engagement between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing mutual concerns. This visit bodes well for strengthening relations and fostering greater regional cooperation in the Pacific.
