Super Rugby Pacific has announced the establishment of the inaugural Player of the Year Award, aimed at recognizing the most outstanding player during the upcoming season. This award will be determined through votes cast by the coaches and captains of the 11 participating clubs.
After each match, the coaches and captains will nominate their top three players using a 3-2-1 points system. The voting results will be made public every Tuesday on Super Rugby Pacific’s social media platforms, culminating in the announcement of the winner at the end of the regular season.
Jack Measley, the CEO of Super Rugby Pacific, expressed that this initiative will help enhance fan engagement and shine a spotlight on individual players’ performances. He noted that while national unions have traditionally recognized the excellence of players, this marks a significant step toward a competition-led awards program. Fans are expected to actively participate in the voting process, which will ignite discussions around the evolving leaderboard throughout the season.
In previous years, individual accolades for Super Rugby Pacific were awarded separately by Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby, which recognized their best players. For instance, Fraser McReight of the Queensland Reds won back-to-back Australian Super Rugby Player of the Year awards, and Hoskins Sotutu of the Blues was recognized as New Zealand Rugby’s Player of the Year in December for his remarkable contributions, including scoring 12 tries and providing eight assists.
This new award ceremony not only adds excitement to the season but also emphasizes the significance of individual performances in the broader context of the league. It elevates fan interaction and celebrates the commitment of players within the Super Rugby Pacific competition, paving the way for a thrilling 2025 season ahead.
Overall, the introduction of the Player of the Year Award is a promising initiative that enhances the competitive spirit, fosters community engagement, and encourages players to elevate their game to earn recognition. It also brings hope for fans to have a more interactive experience as they track their favorite players’ standings throughout the season.
