The elections for the Sugarcane Growers Council are set to occur this year, as confirmed by Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure, chairperson of the Justice, Law, and Human Rights Council. He emphasized that the government has already allocated the necessary funds for the elections, stating, “The elections are being funded by the government and have already been budgeted for.”

The timing of these elections correlates with the anticipated presentation of the Sugar Industry Bill in Parliament, which is scheduled for March. Ratu Rakuita mentioned, “As for when the elections will happen, that is a question for the Ministry and the Council, but they will be waiting for us once we return in March.” Should the Bill be approved, the responsibility for organizing the elections will fall to the Sugar Ministry and the Sugarcane Growers Council.

Ratu Rakuita also remarked on the consultations regarding the elections, indicating that all submissions are valuable and have garnered positive feedback, enhancing confidence in the electoral process.

With the elections approaching and government support in place, the sugar industry stakeholders are hopeful for a smooth electoral process that reflects the voices of the growers. This initiative holds the potential to empower sugarcane growers and bring about meaningful changes within the industry.
