Sugar Industry Fallout: Government’s Empty Promises Exposed

The Deputy Leader of Opposition, Parveen Kumar, has criticized the Coalition Government for its failure to follow through on its promise to construct a new sugar mill in Rakiraki, calling the commitment a “misleading election promise.” Fiji Sugar Corporation chairman Nitya Reddy mentioned that the corporation is still conducting due diligence and plans to make an announcement in six months.

Kumar stated, “The promise to rebuild the Rakiraki sugar mill made during the 2022 elections has proven to be nothing more than empty rhetoric designed to win votes without any real intention.” He described the government’s failure to rebuild the Penang mill as a betrayal to the people of Rakiraki and the broader sugar industry, highlighting that the reasons for the mill’s closure—declining sugar production and high operational costs—remain unaddressed.

Reddy added that rather than seeking practical solutions, the government has opted to mislead farmers with empty promises. Kumar emphasized that the Coalition Government’s unfulfilled commitments are undermining trust and threatening the future of the sugar industry.
