Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad has delivered a stark warning to students about the dangers posed by drug use, which he labelled a persistent threat to both individual lives and society. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of new bure at Vunimono High School in Nausori, he emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing this critical issue head-on.
Professor Prasad outlined the destructive nature of drugs, stating that they can devastate not only personal lives but also families and communities. “This is something that we as a government are tackling head-on,” he asserted, underscoring the allocation of resources aimed at curbing drug trafficking and use. He called on students to cultivate a fear of drugs, urging them to align with their peers in collectively rejecting drug culture.
Echoing sentiments previously addressed at the Gold N Water Carnival, which had a theme centered on empowering communities to say no to drugs, Professor Prasad reiterated that drug abuse is a national crisis. His remarks dovetail with ongoing government efforts to enhance law enforcement capabilities and educate the public about the repercussions of substance abuse.
In highlighting the crisis, he encourages students to openly communicate the dangers associated with drug use amongst their friends and family. “Drugs can destroy you. It will destroy your families, it will destroy your societies, it will destroy a country,” he warned, emphasizing the need for vigilance and proactive measures to avert deeper societal harm.
Professor Prasad’s commitment to combating drugs reflects a broader policy focus where community involvement and education play crucial roles. By promoting awareness and collaboration, communities can work towards a future that prioritizes health and wellbeing, free from the shadows of substance misuse.
The proactive stance against drug use not only aims to protect young people but also aspires to build a more resilient society overall, reinforcing the importance of supportive environments conducive to growth and opportunity.
