Dozens of workers from Vanuatu, who were completing their employment in New Zealand’s orchards and vineyards, are currently stranded in Fiji following a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck their homeland. The Bauerfield International Airport in Vanuatu remains closed, with authorities indicating it may not reopen until at least Saturday. In addition, airlines in Australia have also canceled flights to Port Vila, creating a challenging situation for those wishing to return home.
Among the stranded workers is Danson Kirk, who shared a distressing moment during the earthquake while speaking with his wife. As she prepared to leave for their village, the quake hit, leading to a complete loss of telecommunications. After several hours of concern and uncertainty, Kirk was relieved to finally reconnect with his wife, learning that their family was safe.
Emergency teams from Australia and New Zealand have been deployed to help search for survivors and assist in recovery efforts. Kirk expressed the group’s desire to return home quickly to support their families during this crisis. He conveyed a heartfelt message to those back in Vanuatu, assuring them that they remain in the workers’ thoughts and prayers, despite being far away.
Francis Kelep, another stranded worker, described the overwhelming situation at the hotel where they are staying. They were informed they will have to wait in Fiji for a few days until commercial flights resume, which has left many worried about the safety of their loved ones. Despite the weariness of travel, the workers are finding ways to uplift each other’s spirits by sharing music and laughter.
Kelep recounted a recent personal tragedy as one of his colleagues faced a frightening incident when his wife suffered minor injuries during the quake. He offered condolences and support during this difficult time, recognizing the higher toll the disaster inevitably took on others.
As rescue efforts continue, and with local authorities working tirelessly to locate and assist those trapped by the quake’s aftermath, these workers remain hopeful that their wait will soon come to an end, allowing them to return home to their families.
This situation highlights the incredible resilience and community spirit among those displaced by natural disasters. Despite the challenges they currently face, the workers’ commitment to supporting their families demonstrates the strength of unity in difficult times.
