Gary Stead will step down as the head coach of New Zealand’s cricket team, the Black Caps, at the end of June. This announcement marks the conclusion of a remarkable seven-year tenure, highlighted by significant achievements such as winning the inaugural World Test Championship title.
At 53 years old, Stead had previously resigned as the coach for the country’s white-ball teams in April, signaling his desire to reduce his time on tour. However, New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) vision of having a unified coach for all formats did not align with his aspirations.
Reflecting on his coaching journey, Stead expressed his fondness for the memories made over the years with a talented group of players. He noted, “There’s been some amazing memories over the past seven years… I’d like to think that regardless of results, the opposition know the Black Caps are a team that won’t fold.”
His tenure is marked by several highlights, including New Zealand’s historic victories, such as the 3-0 series win against India in their home conditions last year and runner-up finishes in major tournaments, including the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the most recent T20 World Cup in 2021. Under his leadership, the Black Caps also reached the top rankings in Test and ODI formats, showcasing extraordinary performance compared to other cricketing nations with fewer resources.
Kane Williamson, a former captain of the Black Caps, praised Stead’s diligence and passion, indicating that he is likely to be remembered among New Zealand’s most successful cricket coaches. “He was always thorough in his planning and preparation and will go down as one of our best coaches, but an even better bloke,” Williamson remarked.
Following his departure, NZC has initiated a search for Stead’s successor as he plans to take some time off to recharge before exploring new coaching opportunities, both domestically and internationally. Stead is eager to share the valuable knowledge and experience he has gained over three decades in professional sport.
This transition opens both an exciting chapter for Stead and a new beginning for the Black Caps. As he contemplates his next move, there is hope that his next endeavor will be as impactful as his successful tenure with the New Zealand cricket team.
The future looks promising for both Stead and the Black Caps, offering an opportunity for rejuvenation in New Zealand cricket as the governing body seeks a new leader to guide the team forward.
