The National Fire Authority (NFA) is calling on the public to remain cautious and celebrate the festive season responsibly. In his New Year’s message, CEO Puamau Sowane expressed his concern over the tragic loss of life and property that often occurs during this time.

Sowane highlighted that December tends to see an increase in residential fires, and urged people to take necessary precautions. Data from the NFA indicates a troubling trend: from 2019 to 2023, there have been 90 residential fires in December alone, resulting in approximately $11.6 million in damages.

Breaking down the statistics, there were 19 fires in 2019, 10 in 2020, 19 in 2021, and 21 in both 2022 and 2023. As December 31 approaches, 11 fires have already been reported this month.

In closing, the NFA emphasizes the importance of staying diligent and prioritizing safety during the New Year celebrations, encouraging individuals to enjoy this time with their families and loved ones while remaining cautious.

As we step into the New Year, it’s a reminder of the strength of community and the importance of safety. This call to vigilance not only helps to protect lives and property but also fosters a spirit of care and responsibility among the public. Let’s continue to support one another as we celebrate the festivities.
