The National Fire Authority (NFA) is emphasizing the importance of vigilance and safety as the festive season approaches. In a New Year’s message, CEO Puamau Sowane expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and homes that often occurs during this time. He highlighted December as a particularly risky month, historically characterized by an increase in residential fires.
Mr. Sowane referenced data indicating a concerning trend: from 2019 to 2023, there were a total of 90 residential fires reported in December, resulting in damages exceeding $11.6 million. The breakdown of this data reveals 19 fires in 2019, 10 in 2020, 19 in 2021, 21 in 2022, and 21 in 2023. Notably, with only one day left before the New Year, there have already been 11 fires reported this month.
In light of these statistics, the NFA is urging the community to prioritize safety, remain alert, and consciously enjoy the festive season with loved ones. This appeal is a reminder of the importance of taking preventive measures to protect homes and families during this celebratory time.
As we embrace the New Year, there is hope that increased awareness and community cooperation will help reduce fire incidents and foster a safer environment for everyone.
