The Land Transport Authority is urging all road users to exercise caution as severe weather, including heavy rainfall and flash flooding, affects various regions across the country. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that these challenging weather conditions heighten road safety risks and called for increased vigilance among both drivers and pedestrians.
Rokosawa made it clear that the combination of intense rainfall, diminished visibility, and flooded roads contributes to hazardous conditions. He advised the public to prioritize safety at all times and to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas prone to flooding. For those who must be on the roads, staying informed about weather alerts and road closures is crucial. He urged people to remain alert to changing conditions and prepared for sudden road closures, detours, and other potential hazards like fallen debris.
Despite the warnings, Rokosawa expressed concern that some drivers continue to act recklessly, disregarding safety protocols by driving too fast through flooded areas. He assured that the Authority is prepared to take decisive action against those who violate traffic laws and endanger public safety, implementing penalties to deter irresponsible driving behavior.
He also provided several safety recommendations for drivers, highlighting the importance of adhering to speed limits, adjusting driving behavior according to weather conditions, maintaining safe distances from other vehicles, using headlights in poor visibility, and planning trips to factor in potential delays.
In light of these challenges, Rokosawa reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring public safety during adverse weather conditions, encouraging all road users to stay informed and proactive in their travel plans.
This call to action not only prioritizes safety during severe weather but also highlights the community’s shared responsibility to protect each other on the roads. By remaining vigilant and following the guidelines, everyone can contribute to a safer travel environment despite the challenges posed by nature.
