The National Fire Authority (NFA) is calling on the public to remain vigilant and responsible as they celebrate the festive season. In a New Year’s message, CEO Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the number of lives and properties lost during this time of year due to fires.

Sowane highlighted troubling statistics that reveal a distinct increase in residential fires during December, urging everyone to take necessary precautions. According to NFA data, there have been 90 residential fires reported nationwide from 2019 to 2023, resulting in significant damages amounting to $11.6 million. The breakdown shows 19 fires in 2019, 10 in 2020, 19 in 2021, and increases to 21 fires for both 2022 and 2023. Notably, as December draws to a close, there have already been 11 fires documented this month.

As the New Year approaches, the NFA emphasizes the importance of safety, encouraging families and loved ones to enjoy the festive season without compromising their well-being.

This call for vigilance serves as a reminder to take safety seriously, especially during times of celebration when the risk of fires may be heightened. By fostering awareness and practicing safety measures, the community can help reduce these incidents and protect their homes and families.

In summary, the NFA’s message is one of caution and responsibility, urging the public to celebrate the season while prioritizing safety to avert tragedies related to fires. This proactive approach can lead to a safer environment for everyone to enjoy the holidays together.
