Mele Uluiqalau, a student at the University of the South Pacific, expressed enthusiasm about the new service, acknowledging its potential impact on young people pursuing educational goals from remote areas. “I want to thank the Government and especially the International Organization for Migration for installing the Starlink kits on the island. This will really benefit villagers on Lakeba, especially students who rely on the internet for research projects and studies,” she stated.
Kelepi Gucake, the Mata ni Tikina for Lakeba and a retired serviceman with experience in both the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police, underscored the benefits this improved communication will bring, especially regarding safety and early warning systems during cyclone seasons. “This will greatly assist Lakeba, especially for our communication needs and early-warning systems during the cyclone season,” he added.
Moreover, Gucake highlighted the exciting possibilities for boosting tourism through better connectivity, which would enable the community to effectively market its attractions and engage with potential visitors online. Enhanced internet access will also positively impact the healthcare sector, with improved connectivity at Lakeba Island Hospital allowing medical professionals to provide superior care.
Fulaga, the Mata ni Tikina, Ledua Finau, emphasized that this donation comes at a crucial time, particularly as climate change increasingly affects remote islands. The installation of the Starlink kits signals a hopeful future for Lakeba, paving the way for enhanced communication, education, and economic prospects, ultimately bettering the lives of its residents.
