Efforts are intensifying to enhance disaster preparedness in Fiji’s remote and maritime communities, largely bolstered by the introduction of Starlink, which significantly improves communication reliability during emergencies. The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, highlighted that these mitigation efforts are informed by direct feedback from affected communities and regular field assessments conducted by divisional teams and the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO).
Ditoka emphasized the importance of close coordination among the Ministry, divisional offices, and NDRMO in ensuring that adaptation measures are continuously evaluated and improved. This collaboration is crucial in making necessary adjustments to better protect vulnerable communities.
Communication remains a critical focus during disasters, with the Ministry employing a variety of channels such as social media, email, official websites, telephone systems, and now the Starlink network to ensure stakeholders stay informed. Ditoka pointed out the existing early warning systems in place for flood risks and the strategic pre-positioning of essential non-food item packages across Fiji, including in hard-to-reach locations.
The integration of the Starlink network has notably enhanced disaster response capabilities in isolated areas, enabling authorities to coordinate efforts swiftly and effectively in times of emergency. Moreover, Ditoka noted that disaster preparedness has become a regular practice, underpinned by ongoing training and community-based disaster risk management programs, ensuring that communities are better equipped to handle future challenges.
This proactive approach not only reinforces Fiji’s resilience against potential disasters but also fosters a sense of security and preparedness among its inhabitants, demonstrating the country’s commitment to safeguarding its most vulnerable populations.
