Digicel Fiji has recently entered into a contract with the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF) to enhance mobile and digital connectivity for remote communities in the Lau Group. This initiative forms part of the government’s Universal Service Obligation programme, aimed at providing vital services and opportunities to underserved areas, enabling greater economic development and access to digital markets that were previously inaccessible.

TAF Chairman David Eyre emphasized that universal connectivity is essential for promoting inclusive economic and social growth. The project will utilize government-backed satellite Wi-Fi infrastructure, including cutting-edge Starlink technology, to effectively reach even the most isolated communities.

Farid Mohammed, Chief Executive of Digicel Fiji, noted that this deployment represents a significant advancement toward ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital future. He highlighted that connecting these remote communities is expected to stimulate economic growth, enhance access to healthcare and education, and facilitate financial inclusion for many Fijians.

The undertaking is a collaborative effort between Digicel, TAF, and the Ministry of Finance, featuring Service Level Agreements designed to deliver robust and high-quality connectivity solutions adapted to Fiji’s challenging geographical landscape. This initiative marks a hopeful step towards bridging the digital divide in the region, fostering a more inclusive society where all citizens can thrive.
