This week, the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) spread joy by distributing Christmas gifts to around 600 children associated with the Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) across various regions in Fiji, including Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, Rakiraki, and Labasa. This initiative is part of PRF’s Annual Christmas Gift and Stationery Drive, aimed at bringing some festive cheer to children who often go overlooked.
The event brought smiles and laughter, embodying the true spirit of Christmas. PRF Founder Amitesh Deo emphasized the initiative’s purpose, reminding adults of the joy found in simple things and the importance of hope, especially during challenging times. He stressed that this drive signifies the real meaning of Christmas—spreading joy and happiness, despite the world’s struggles.
Launched in 2022, the Christmas and Stationery Drive seeks to do more than just provide gifts; it aims to bestow hope and dignity upon families who play a vital role in Fiji’s recycling ecosystem. CPR workers collect recyclables from public areas and dumpsites, often facing significant challenges while managing waste sustainably.
Deo pointed out that many families served by CPR live in poverty, where basic needs often overshadow the desire for school supplies or toys. This initiative alleviates some of that burden and ensures that every child experiences the joy of receiving a gift during Christmas.
The drive this year also aims to equip children with essential school stationery for the upcoming academic year, reinforcing the idea that restoring dignity to families is just as crucial as providing gifts. Deo noted that society should recognize and support these children, ensuring they feel valued.
PRF expressed gratitude to numerous sponsors and partners, including Pacific Energy, Vinod Patel & Company Ltd, and others, for their support in making this endeavor possible. Notably, this year marks the expansion of the drive to Labasa, broadening its reach and impact across the nation.
