South Africa were crowned 2025/2026 HSBC SVNS Series champions after a tense 10-7 victory over Fiji Airways Fiji in the New York series final at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey on March 16, 2026. The Blitzboks’ structured defence and clinical finishing edged out Fiji’s trademark flair in a match decided by fine margins and a handful of decisive moments.
The opening blow came inside two minutes when captain Impi Visser – playing his 50th tournament for South Africa – forced a turnover by ripping the ball from Fijian playmaker Terio Veilawa. Gino Cupido read the play perfectly, supporting the turnover and taking an inside pass to race in unchallenged for the game's first try. South Africa led 5-0 and built their game around relentless pressure at the breakdown and a quick, organised defensive line that stifled Fiji’s usual attacking rhythm.
South Africa maintained that intensity after the interval. A slick team move in the second half involving Donavan Don saw Tristan Leyds finish a well-worked passage to extend the lead to 10-0, giving the Blitzboks a cushion that forced Fiji to take risks. South Africa’s defence continued to scramble effectively, turning promising Fijian possessions into low-percentage chances.
Fiji finally breached the line in the 12th minute through forward Kevekini Tanivanuakula, who powered through a hole before delivering a silky offload to Veilawa, who went over under the posts. The conversion narrowed the gap to 10-7 and left the match hanging on a single score in the closing exchanges as Fiji hunted a late winner.
The final phases were dramatic. Fiji pressed deep into South African territory and fashioned a late opportunity inside the Blitzboks’ five-metre area, only for Tanivanuakula to knock on, squandering a last chance to turn the game. South Africa held on as the clock ran out, the defence that had frustrated Fiji for most of the match ultimately proving decisive.
The win marks South Africa’s seventh tournament cup victory on American soil and secures their fifth overall HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series title. Half-back Selvyn Davids was named Player of the Final for his influential role in both attack and defence, marshaling South Africa’s tempo and helping to blunt Fiji’s counter-attacks. For Fiji, the loss prolongs their search for a New York or overall SVNS cup this season, but the final again illustrated the narrow margins separating the world’s top sevens sides.
